The Fire Service Act (promulgated in 1948) collectively refers to equipment used for firefighting (fire extinguishing equipment, alarm equipment, and evacuation equipment), fire water supply, and facilities necessary for firefighting activities. The specific contents are stipulated in the Enforcement Order of the Fire Service Act, but this section will discuss them. In general, the term is used to distinguish it from firefighting facilities such as fire hydrants, fire water tanks, fire engines, fire stations, fire schools, and public fire alarms that are installed by firefighting agencies or municipalities for public use. Article 17 of the Fire Service Act stipulates that firefighting equipment must be installed and maintained at the expense of the parties involved (owners, managers, or occupants) of buildings, etc. that meet certain uses, sizes, structures, etc., in accordance with technical standards.

消防の用に供する設備(消火設備，警報設備および避難設備)，消防用水および消火活動上必要な施設を総称して，消防法(1948公布)では消防用設備等といい，その具体的内容については消防法施行令で定めているが，本項ではこれについて述べる。消防機関または市町村が公共の用に供するために設置する消火栓，防火水槽，消防自動車，消防署，消防学校および公衆用火災報知機などの消防施設とは，一般に，区別して用いられる。消防用設備等は消防法17条の規定に基づき，一定の用途，規模および構造等に該当する建築物等の関係者(所有者，管理者または占有者)がみずからの費用で技術上の基準に従って設置し，維持管理しなければならないものとなっている。
