1892‐1978 American film entrepreneur and producer. One of the founders of the Hollywood film company Warner Bros. He was born in Canada as the youngest of 12 children of Polish Jewish immigrants. After helping out with family businesses such as a shoe repair shop, a butcher's shop, a bicycle shop, a nickelodeon operation, and a film tour, he founded Warner Bros. with his brothers (1923). Jack was in charge of production throughout the company, and with the success of the first full-scale talkie, The Jazz Singer (1927), and the skill of Darryl F. Zanuck, who appointed him as head of production, he paved the way for Warner Bros. to develop into one of the leading companies (the Hollywood majors) in pre-war Hollywood.
