Jain ruins in the Mysore region of Karnataka, southern India. A sacred Jain site, the rocky mountain called Chandragiri, is home to a huge carved statue (17.5m high) of the second patriarch Gomateshvara, and is also important in the history of Jain art. Many inscriptions dating from the 7th century onwards have been discovered here, and they are noteworthy for the legends contained within. According to these, "Chandragupta (late 4th century BCE) converted to Jainism in his old age, abdicated from the throne, became a monk, and followed his teacher to retire to Shravanabelgora, a sacred place in Mysore, where he practiced asceticism and fasted to death."

インド南部，カルナータカ州マイソール地方のジャイナ教の遺跡。ジャイナ教の聖地で，チャンドラギリと呼ばれる岩山には，第2代祖師ゴーマテーシュバラの巨大な丸彫立像(高さ17.5m)があり，ジャイナ教美術史上も重要である。7世紀以後とされる碑文が多く発見され，そこに見られる伝承で注目される。それによれば，〈チャンドラグプタ(前4世紀末)は老齢にいたりジャイナ教に改宗し，王位を譲り出家し師に従ってマイソールの聖地シュラバナベルゴーラに隠棲し，苦行して断食死をとげた〉という。
