Born: August 16, 1852 in St. Gallen
Died: May 19, 1938. Tübingen. A theologian born in Switzerland and active in Germany. He served as professor of New Testament and systematic theology at the universities of Greifswald, Berlin, and Tübingen. Taking a biblicist stance, he achieved success in the field of New Testament studies by applying his research into late Judaism and history to New Testament interpretation. In the field of ethics, he stressed the importance of Christian social activity in this world. His major works include Erläuterungen zum Neuen Testament (Commentaries on the New Testament) (3 volumes, 1887-1904), Das christliche Dogma (Christian Doctrine) (11), and Die christliche Ethik (Christian Ethics) (14).
