Angelus - Angelus (English spelling)

In Christianity, this refers to the "Angelus prayer" or the "angel bell" that announces the time for it. Angelus means angel, and it was named so from the opening phrase of the Angelus prayer, Angelus Domini (Angel of the Lord). The Angelus prayer is to commemorate the mystery of the conception of Christ to the Virgin Mary, and is recited three times a day, at 6am, noon, and 6pm, accompanied by the ringing of church bells. Its origins date back to the Middle Ages, but it was formulated in the 16th century and is still performed in Catholic churches today. Millet's "Angelus" is a striking depiction of a scene from this prayer.

キリスト教で、「お告げの祈り」、またはそのための時刻を知らせる「お告げの鐘」をいう。angelusは天使を意味し、お告げの祈りの冒頭の句Angelus Domini（主の御使(みつかい)）から、こうよばれるようになった。お告げの祈りは、聖母マリアへのキリスト懐胎の玄義（秘義）を記念するためのもので、朝6時、正午、夕6時の三度、教会の鳴らす鐘とともに唱えられる。その起源は中世にさかのぼるが、16世紀から定式化され、カトリック教会では今日も行われている。ミレーの『晩鐘(アンジェラス)』は、この祈りの一場面を印象的に描いている。
