　古い話ですが、この「臥薪」「嘗胆」が並んで文献に現れるのは、かなり後のこと。宋の時代になってからです。
　日本では明治時代に広まりました。日清戦争で得た領土を、ロシアなどの三国干渉で返還した時、「復讐の日まで我慢しよう」という意味で、「臥薪嘗胆」のスローガンが叫ばれました。
　例文の［わんぱく時代］では、日露戦争のことを「十年臥薪嘗胆の戦争」と表現しています。つまり、ロシアに対する復讐の戦争だということです。
　古いことばとは言え、日本では明治時代以降の「新顔」なので、時代劇では使わないのが無難。これは、時代考証専門家の大森洋平さんの意見です。
