At the age of 25, he inserted a ureteral catheter through a vein in his left arm to the right atrium, and continued to perform cardiac catheterization a total of seven times. In 1941, André F. Cournand (1895-1988), an American born in France, performed cardiac catheterization of the right heart system from a systemic vein to the right atrium, right ventricle, and pulmonary artery, establishing right heart catheterization (Forssmann and Cournand were awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine together with DW Richards in 1956). In 1950, HAZimmermann performed a catheterization technique from an artery to the left ventricle in a retrograde manner, which was succeeded by S.I.
