Max Ophüls

Japanese: オフュルス - おふゅるす（英語表記）Max Ophüls

German-born international film director who was active mainly in France, Germany and the United States. He is known for his films with female protagonists. Born in Saarbrücken under German occupation, he worked as a stage director mainly in Vienna before making his directorial debut in 1931. To avoid the rise of the Nazis, he moved to France in 1933 and became a French citizen in 1936. He moved to the United States in 1941 and made films such as "The Stormy Child" (1947) and "A Lady in the Dark" (1948) in Hollywood. He returned to France in 1950 and made three masterpieces starring Danielle Darrieux: "Rondo" (1950), "Pleasure" (1952), and "La vie le femme" (1953). He then directed his major work "Women's History" (1955), but it was a commercial failure and an abridged version was released. The complete version was revived in 2008. His moving shots, which made extensive use of cranes, had a major influence on directors such as Stanley Kubrick and Jacques Demy. The film director Marcel Ophüls (1927-) is his son.

ドイツ出身でフランスを中心に、ドイツ、アメリカで活躍した国際派の映画監督。女性を主人公にした映画に定評がある。ドイツ占領下のザールブリュッケンに生まれ、ウィーンを中心に舞台演出家として活躍した後、1931年に監督デビュー。ナチスの台頭を避けて1933年にフランスに渡り、1936年に国籍を取得。1941年に渡米し、ハリウッドで『風雲児』（1947）、『忘れじの面影』（1948）などを撮る。1950年にフランスに戻り、ダニエル・ダリューを主人公に『輪舞』（1950）、『快楽』（1952）、『たそがれの女心』（1953）の3本の傑作を撮った後、大作『歴史は女で作られる』（1955）を手がけるが、興行的には失敗に終わり、短縮版が公開された。この完全版がよみがえるのは2008年のことである。クレーンを多用した移動撮影は、スタンリー・キューブリックやジャック・ドゥミなどに大きな影響を与えた。映画監督のマルセル・オフュルスMarcel Ophüls（1927―　）は彼の息子。
