Speyer (English spelling)

A small city in the state of Rhineland-Pfalz, located on the left bank of the middle Rhine in western Germany. Population 47,000 (1991). Home to a Roman Catholic bishopric. After World War II, metal, chemical fiber, glass, and food industries developed, but it is better known as a historic city. Ptolemy mentioned this place as Noviomagus around 150. In ancient times, the area was occupied by a Celtic settlement, and then by the Nemetes tribe from 70 BC. In 56 BC, Caesar conquered this area, and Noviomagus became the center of the Roman Civitas Nemetum.

ドイツ西部，ライン川中流左岸にあるラインラント･ファルツ州の小都市。人口4万7000(1991)。ローマ･カトリック司教座の所在地。第2次世界大戦後，金属･化学繊維･ガラス･食品工業なども発達したが，むしろ歴史的古都として有名。　この地は，すでに150年ころ，ノウィオマグスNoviomagusという名でプトレマイオスが言及している。古くはケルト人の集落，次いで前70年以来ネメテース族が占めていたこの地域を，前56年カエサルが征服，以後ノウィオマグスがローマのキウィタス･ネメトゥムの中心となった。
