A small city in the state of Rhineland-Pfalz, located on the left bank of the middle Rhine in western Germany. Population 47,000 (1991). Home to a Roman Catholic bishopric. After World War II, metal, chemical fiber, glass, and food industries developed, but it is better known as a historic city. Ptolemy mentioned this place as Noviomagus around 150. In ancient times, the area was occupied by a Celtic settlement, and then by the Nemetes tribe from 70 BC. In 56 BC, Caesar conquered this area, and Noviomagus became the center of the Roman Civitas Nemetum. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
