...It arose toward the end of the Pleistocene, following the Late Paleolithic Ater culture, which had been widespread in North Africa until then, and developed separately from the Mesolithic cultures of Europe. The representative site is El Mekta, near the town of Gafsa in southern Tunisia, and was named after Gafsa, which was called Capsa in Roman times. The ruins are found in rock shelters and caves, but are often found outdoors, and shell mounds, camp ruins, and stone hearth ruins are characteristic.
