In the narrow sense, it refers only to the three countries that were once under French rule: Vietnam, Cambodia, and Laos, but this is an abbreviation of the French Indochina Federation (1887-1945). Incidentally, the French called Myanmar before independence British Indochina. Indochina is home to five great rivers, all of which except for one originate in eastern Tibet: the Song Khoi (Red River), the Mekong, the Menam (Chao Phraya), the Salween, and the Irrawaddy.
