A Soviet one-seater satellite. Vostok means "East". Vostok 1 was launched from Baikonur base at 9:07 a.m. (Moscow time) on April 12, 1961, with YA Gagarin on board. It completed one orbit in 1 hour and 48 minutes with a perigee of 180 km and an apogee of 327 km, and parachuted to a point 100 km southeast of Saratov on the Volga River, becoming the first man in history to successfully fly in space. The Vostok capsule was a sphere with a diameter of 2.3 m, weighed about 4.7 t, and had a cylindrical engine attached to the rear. Vostok 2, carrying GS Titov, was launched on August 6, 1961, and successfully completed 17 orbits around the Earth, flying for 25 hours and 11 minutes. After that, A.G. Nikolaev's No. 3 (64 orbits around the Earth), P. Popovich's No. 4 (48 orbits), V.F. Bykovsky's No. 5 (81 orbits), and finally the world's first female astronaut, V.V. Tereshkova's No. 6, launched on June 16, 1963, flew in formation with No. 5, making 48 orbits around the Earth before returning, and the project was completed.
