This is a music competition held every year from late August to September in Geneva, Switzerland. Founded in 1939, it is the most frequently held of its kind, has a wide variety of categories, and has many participants. There are 26 categories in total, and usually about four categories are competed in each year, but the categories change every year. First place winners include Benedetti Michelangeli, Algerich, Gulda, and Solti (all piano), Stader, Los Angeles, and Ameling (all vocal), Nicolet, Debost, Pierlot, Holliger, Ongnu, and André (all wind instruments). As of 2001, the number of Japanese winners had risen to 34, with the first winner being pianist Kiyoko Tanaka (second place in 1952), followed by violinist Koji Toyoda (second place in 1958). Those who have won first place include violist Imai Nobuko (1968), percussionist Yoshihara Sumire (1972), flutist Kono Toshiko (1973), and vocalist Banba Chihiro (1985).
