School uniform - gakusei fuku

Japanese:
School uniform - gakusei fuku

In a broad sense, it means clothes worn by students. In Japan, it generally refers to the uniforms worn by male students. It refers to a black jacket with a stand-up collar, open front, and a row of buttons, long pants, or a navy serge suit-style jacket and long pants. For women, the standard combination is a navy serge sailor-style jacket and pleated skirt, or a navy serge suit-style jacket and pleated, semi-tight, or flared skirt. Historically, it evolved from the uniforms of railway workers and police officers. Black or navy rasya (rasha) was the norm in winter, and kokura shimofuri (marbled ragura) was the norm in summer, but around 1885 (Meiji 18), the Imperial University established a uniform with a stand-up collar, open front, and gold buttons. For women, Tokyo Women's Normal School began wearing Western-style uniforms in the mid-1880s.
