1577‐1657 French physician and professor of anatomy at the University of Paris. He and his father served as dean of the medical school for two generations. He was physician to Henry IV, Louis XIII, and Marie de' Medici. He built the university's anatomical hall from 1619 to 1622, and in 1627 built the Royal Botanical Garden (Jardin des Plantes), which also served as a research institute for natural sciences and medicine. Many of his anatomical discoveries were compiled in his book, Disquisitions on Anatomy (1628-29). He was called the "Prince of Anatomy," but his stubbornness in not giving up on his own theories was a drawback, and he strongly opposed W. Harvey's theory on the circulation of the blood.
