A public square (forum) in the ancient Roman capital. In Italian it is called the Roman Forum. In the 7th century BC, the lowlands between the four hills of the Capitoline, Palatine, Quirinal, and Esquilinus were developed into a square. During the monarchy it was the center of commercial activity, but during the republic it became the center of religious and political activity with the construction of the Temple of Saturn and the Temple of Castor and Pollux, and the display of the Twelve Tables on the rostrum (a platform for orators).
