Baloch - Federigo Barocci

Italian painter of late Mannerism and early Baroque. Born in Urbino, he died there. He was taught painting by a Venetian painter and studied under Girolamo Genga in Pesaro. He went to Rome around 1550, and in 1560 he began working on the fresco decoration of Pope Pius IV's Villa (in the Vatican Gardens), which he completed and gained fame. His Descent from the Cross, which he painted for the Cathedral in Perugia in 1568-69, features figures with bold gestures, in an artificial light-dark contrast and dynamic composition, and it is in this work that we can already see the foreshadowing of Rubens' Baroque style. He also produced numerous sketches as preparatory studies for the painting.

イタリアの後期マニエリスムおよび初期バロックの画家。ウルビーノに生まれ、同地に没。ベネチア出身の画家に絵画の手ほどきを受け、ペーザロでジローラモ・ジェンガに学ぶ。1550年ころローマに出て、60年にはピウス4世の小邸（バチカン庭園内）のフレスコ装飾に着手し、その完成により名声を高める。68～69年ペルージアの大聖堂のために描いた『十字架降下』は、大胆な身ぶりの人物たちが人為的な明暗対比とダイナミックな構図のうちに描き出された作品で、そこにはすでにルーベンスのバロック様式の予兆を看取することができる。また絵画の準備段階に習作として描いた数多くの素描がある。
