Angkor Dynasty - Angkor
Around 802 - 1432
The prosperous Khmer kingdom that unified the divided Kingdom of Chenla (Cambodia)
In the 8th century, Cambodia was divided into the Land and Water Kingdoms, but in the 9th century, Jayavarman II unified the country and established the Angkor Dynasty. The kingdom subsequently expanded its territory, and by the 13th century it had formed a vast territory that included the northern part of the Malay Peninsula, Thailand, Laos, and Cambodia. Angkor Wat was built during the reign of Suryavarman II, and Angkor Thom was built during the reign of Jayavarman VII. The kingdom collapsed in 1432 after an attack by the Ayutthaya Dynasty. Excavation of Angkor Wat began in the 1860s by French archaeologists.
