The remains of Cambodia's largest city wall remain in Angkor, the capital of the Angkor Dynasty (9th to 15th centuries). Angkor is the Sanskrit word nagara (city), and Thom is the Khmer adjective meaning "large." The square city wall is about 3 km on each side and 8 m high, and was built by piling up blocks of laterite (red clay), making it extremely sturdy. The interior area is 9 km2. There are huge city gate entrances in the center of each of the east, west, north and south sides, and another entrance commonly known as the "Gate of Victory" is located north of the eastern city gate.
