A former town in Nakakanbara County, central Niigata Prefecture. It was incorporated as a town on November 1, 1996 from Yokogoshi Village. It is located on the left bank of the Agano River. Located in the center of the Echigo Plain, rice is the main industry, but in recent years tulip bulb cultivation has also become popular. With the development of the surrounding high-speed transportation system, industrial complexes and residential land development have progressed, and the population is increasing. The former residence (approximately 30,000 m2 ) of the Ito family, who were large landowners in Echigo in the early modern period, on the banks of the Agano River is open to the public as the Northern Culture Museum. In March 2005, Niitsu City, Shirane City, Toyosaka City, Kosudo Town, Kameda Town in Nakakanbara County, Iwamuro Village, Nishikawa Town, Aikata Village, Katahigashi Village, Tsukigata Village, and Nakanokuchi Village in Nishikanbara County were incorporated into Niigata City. 23.62 km2 . Population 11,402 (2003).

新潟県中部,中蒲原郡の旧町。1996年11月1日に横越村から町制。阿賀野川の左岸に位置する。越後平野中央部にあって米作を中心とし,近年はチューリップの球根栽培も盛んになっている。周辺の高速交通体系の整備に伴って工業団地や宅地造成が進み,人口が増加している。阿賀野川岸に近世,越後の大地主であった伊藤家の旧邸(面積約3万m2)が,北方文化博物館として公開されている。2005年3月新津市,白根市,豊栄市,中蒲原郡小須戸町,亀田町,西蒲原郡岩室村,西川町,味方村,潟東村,月潟村,中之口村と新潟市へ編入。23.62km2。1万1402人(2003)。
