Denier (English spelling)

A unit of measurement for the thickness (fineness) of raw yarn. It is used for long fibers (filaments) such as raw silk, rayon, and woven yarn. According to the constant length method, which determines the fineness by measuring the weight at a constant length, a yarn that is 450 m long and weighs 50 mg is considered to have a fineness of 1 denier. The higher the denier number, the thicker the yarn. The use of tex is being promoted as the international standard method. There is also a unit of measurement for the fineness of the same raw yarn, called count (constant weight method), which is used for spun yarns such as cotton yarn, linen yarn, and wool yarn.

原糸の太さ (繊度) を表わす単位の一つ。生糸，人絹糸，合織糸など長繊維 (フィラメント) に用いられる。長さを一定にして重さを測定して決める恒長式により，長さ 450m，重さ 50mgあるものの繊度を1デニールとする。デニール数が大きくなるにつれて，糸は太くなる。国際標準方式としてはテックスの使用が進められている。また同じ原糸の繊度を表わす単位として番手 (恒重式) があるが，これは綿糸，麻糸，毛糸など紡績糸に用いられている。
