Tuberous root - Tuberous root

Japanese: 塊根 - かいこん
Tuberous root - Tuberous root

Storage roots are plant roots that swell and store nutrients, but they usually take on a spindle-like tuber shape. Many produce adventitious buds and reproduce vegetatively. They are seen in plants such as snake gourd, sweet potato, and dahlia. These roots swell secondary and store nutrients in the parenchyma cells that make up most of the secondary xylem.

The reserve nutrients are usually sugars, often starch as in sweet potatoes, and in dahlias inulin.

 貯蔵養分は糖類が普通で、サツマイモのようにデンプンであることが多く、ダリアではイヌリンである。
