Storage roots are plant roots that swell and store nutrients, but they usually take on a spindle-like tuber shape. Many produce adventitious buds and reproduce vegetatively. They are seen in plants such as snake gourd, sweet potato, and dahlia. These roots swell secondary and store nutrients in the parenchyma cells that make up most of the secondary xylem. The reserve nutrients are usually sugars, often starch as in sweet potatoes, and in dahlias inulin. [Eimasa Nishino] Roots grow from the stems that crawl above the ground, and some of them swell underground and become potatoes. The shape and color vary depending on the variety. ©Shogakukan Photo by Okuyama Hisashi "> Sweet potato tuber Source: Shogakukan Encyclopedia Nipponica About Encyclopedia Nipponica Information | Legend |
