Originally, it was the name given to a natural product commonly known as rosin, but it has come to be used widely today. There are two types: natural resin and synthetic resin. The former is a metabolic product of plants (shellac is an insect secretion), and pine resin is secreted when pine bark is scratched. It is not a so-called polymer compound, but its main component is terpenes. On the other hand, synthetic resin is like the Japanese name for plastic, and this name was born because phenolic resin exhibited properties similar to pine resin (it is actually a completely different thing). Although it is a historical term, it is still used as a resin, for example alkyd resin.
