Shen

Japanese: 沈銓 - しんせん

Also known as "Chinsen." A Chinese painter from the mid-Qing dynasty. Dates of birth and death unknown. Born in Wuxing, Zhejiang Province. His pen name was Hengzhi and his pen name was Nanpin. He arrived in Nagasaki in 1731 and taught flower and bird painting to many Japanese painters, including Kumashiro Yuhi and Song Shiseki. He was more famous in Japan than in China for his great influence on flower and bird painting in the late Edo period. His style of painting is old-fashioned, in the vein of Ming-period flower and bird paintings.

〈ちんせん〉とも。中国，清代中期の画家。生没年不詳。浙江省呉興の人。字を衡之，号を南蘋(なんぴん)といった。1731年長崎に来航して，熊代熊斐(くましろゆうひ)，宋紫石をはじめとする多くの日本画家に花鳥画を教授し，江戸後期の花鳥画に大きな影響を与えたため，中国よりも日本で名高い。画風は明画花鳥図の系統の古風なもの。
