The bay is a part of the Sea of Japan, confined to Ikujibana, west of the Kurobe River estuary, in the east, and the Noto Peninsula in the west. The water is over 1000 meters deep. The bottom topography is divided into east and west by the mid-ocean ridge, which stretches from the center of the bay to the northwest. In the west, the continental shelf is relatively wide, stretching 4 to 6 kilometers from the coast, and the undersea canyons that continue to the mouths of the Jinzu River, Sho River, and other rivers cut the continental shelf, extending long and boat-shaped from the bottom of Toyama Bay into the Sea of Japan. Fixed net fishing is carried out using the continental shelf. In the east, the continental shelf is poorly developed and quickly becomes deep. The bay coast is mostly sandy west of the Joganji River estuary, but to the east it is a gravel beach, and after low pressure systems pass through from autumn to winter, "turning waves" occur, causing severe coastal erosion and a continuous series of revetments. The bay area is home to fishing ports such as Ikuji, Namerikawa, Shinminato, and Himi, as well as the important ports of Toyama, Shin-Toyama, and Fushiki. With industrial areas behind them, the area has developed as a port of entry and exit for imports and exports.
