Examination reference book - Jyukensankosho

Japanese: 受験参考書 - じゅけんさんこうしょ

In modern society, selection is usually based on examinations. Modern school education can be seen as aiming to equip students with the academic ability to pass such examinations. However, when the spread of school education was slow, people relied solely on books to pass examinations. During the Meiji period, many study guides for examinations were published for people who wanted to go to school but could not. At first, school textbooks were used as self-study study guides, but eventually lecture-style books that carefully and thoroughly explained difficult parts of the textbooks became more common, and even books that included many questions similar to actual exam questions to help students prepare for the "real world" appeared.

近代社会では，試験を原理として選抜するのがふつうである。近代の学校教育は，そのような試験に合格しうる学力を身につけさせることを目標としているとみることもできる。しかし，学校教育の普及が遅れているとき，人々は本だけを頼りに試験合格をめざすことになる。明治年間には，学校に行きたくても行けない人々のための受験参考書が数多く出版された。初めは学校用の教科書がそのまま独学用の受験参考書とされたが，やがて，教科書のわかりにくいところを懇切ていねいに解説する講義録形式の本がふえ，さらには，実際の試験問題と類似の問題を数多く並べて〈実戦〉に備えられるよう配慮されたものが現れた。
