A national university corporation. Its predecessor was the government-run Tokyo Women's Normal School, established in Ochanomizu, Kanda, Tokyo in 1874 (Meiji 7). It became the Women's Higher Normal School in 1890 and the Tokyo Women's Higher Normal School in 1908 (Meiji 41). Along with the Nara Women's Higher Normal School in the west, it made a major impact in training female secondary school teachers before the Second World War. In 1949 (Showa 24), it was established as a new national university and renamed Ochanomizu University after its birthplace. After the war, it no longer aimed directly at training secondary school teachers, but instead has been a high-education institution for women, sending excellent human resources to various fields. As of 2010 (Heisei 22), it has three faculties: the Faculty of Letters and Education, the Faculty of Science, and the Faculty of Life Sciences. The Graduate School of Humanities, established in 1976 (reorganized as the Graduate School of Humanities and Sciences in 2007), is attracting attention as a unique doctoral program. It has affiliated educational and research facilities such as the Gulf Biological Education and Research Center, the Gender Studies Center, and the Living Environment Education and Research Center, as well as an affiliated kindergarten, elementary school, junior high school, and high school. In April 2004, with the enforcement of the National University Corporation Law, it became a national university corporation. It is located at 2-1-1 Otsuka, Bunkyo-ku, Tokyo.
