Seagulls are said to be the sacred birds of Aphrodite, the Greek goddess of beauty, and Leukothea, the goddess of the sea. It is said that Leukothea appeared in the form of a seagull to save Odysseus, who was drowning. The bird symbolizes the sea and sailing, and is also said to be the transformed soul of a drowned sailor.
