A general term for the Iranian-speaking peoples of Iran, Afghanistan, and Central Asia. Among the eastern branch of peoples who spoke languages belonging to the Indo-European language family were groups who called themselves Aryans, some of whom became the origin of the Iranian peoples. The name Iran also comes from Arya (Ariya in ancient Persian). Others entered India and were called Indo-Aryans. The Iranians spread as horse-riding nomads from the Iranian Plateau to the Tarim Basin in the 1st millennium BC, and began the transition from nomadism to settled agriculture in various places.
