After living a bohemian life in Paris, he began publishing novels in 1847. His representative works include Les Bourgeois de Molinchart (1855), which satirizes the rural bourgeoisie. He was also well-known as a theorist of realism, and wrote critical essays such as Le Réalisme (57).
