An educational institution for the common people in the Heian period. In 828 (Tencho 5), Kukai established the school on a site of over two blocks in Kujo Nibo, Sakyo, donated by Fujiwara no Mitomi, for those who were not permitted to study at universities or national studies. "Sou-gei shuchi" means to teach various arts and sciences and to spread and express the Buddhist wisdom of Mahavairocana. The school regarded Confucianism and Buddhism as two religions, exoteric and esoteric, and made the idea of the three religions as one as its educational principle. It hoped to achieve the effect of fusing the three religions, so it taught both inner scriptures (books related to Buddhism) and apocrypha (books other than Buddhism). In 835 (Jowa 2), Kukai passed away and the three guardians were no longer in position, so Kukai's disciple Jichie (the head priest of Toji Temple) sold the temple and purchased Oyama Villa in Tamba Province, which he used as a place of residence for the transmission of the teachings.
