Dutch painter and printmaker. Born in Enkhuizen, he studied under his father, a landscape painter, and others. He joined the painters' guilds of Delft in 1646 and The Hague in 1649, then moved to Amsterdam, where he died before the age of 30. He specialized in landscape painting with livestock as the main motif. His work is characterized by relentless detailed depictions based on keen observation and transparent atmospheric expressions, and he had a major influence on 19th century French animal paintings and Dutch and German landscape paintings. オランダの画家，版画家。エンクハイゼンに生まれ，風景画家の父そのほかに学ぶ。1646年にデルフト，49年にハーグの画家組合に入会したのちアムステルダムに移ったが，30歳をまたずに夭折。家畜を主要モティーフとした風景画の専門家。鋭い観察に基づく仮借のない細密描写と透明な大気の表現を特徴とし，19世紀のフランスの動物画およびオランダやドイツの風景画に大きな影響を及ぼす。【高橋達史】
