Dutch painter and printmaker. Born in Enkhuizen, he studied under his father, a landscape painter, and others. He joined the painters' guilds of Delft in 1646 and The Hague in 1649, then moved to Amsterdam, where he died before the age of 30. He specialized in landscape painting with livestock as the main motif. His work is characterized by relentless detailed depictions based on keen observation and transparent atmospheric expressions, and he had a major influence on 19th century French animal paintings and Dutch and German landscape paintings.
