…The Christian missionary work in Scotland was started by Celtic missionaries such as Ninian at the end of the 4th century and Columba who established a monastery on the island of Iona, but after the 11th century it was reorganized under the influence of the Roman Catholic Church. In the 16th century, Calvinist reform was realized by Patrick Hamilton, who was burned at the stake for trying to introduce religious reform, and J. Knox, who inherited the will of George Wishart, and in 1560 the Presbyterian Church was established with the Scottish Confession and the Book of Discipline. After 1603, James I became King of England and introduced the bishopric system, but in 1637, the Archbishop of Canterbury W. Lord forced the use of the Prayer Book, and the Presbyterian Church rose up in rebellion, entering into a solemn alliance with the Long Parliament (1643), accepting the Westminster Confession of Faith and the Westminster Catechism, and reestablishing itself as a Presbyterian Church. …
