Born: July 29, 1869 in Indianapolis
[Died] May 19, 1946, Indianapolis. American novelist and playwright. Dropped out of Princeton University. Assemblyman from Indiana (1902-03). He initially wanted to be an artist, but later became a writer, and published many novels and plays, including his debut novel The Gentleman from Indiana (1899), which exposed corruption in the political world, and Monsieur Beaucaire (1900). Among his most famous works are Penrod (14), Seventeen (16), which deals with adolescent boys, The Magnificent Ambersons (18, Pulitzer Prize), which depicts the history of a Midwestern family, and Alice Adams (21, Pulitzer Prize), which depicts an ordinary woman. He also published memoirs and collections of letters.
