A district in the southern part of Ichikawa City, Chiba Prefecture. It is close to the mouth of the Edogawa River and faces Tokyo Bay. Formerly Gyotoku-cho and Minami-Gyotoku-cho. In the early modern period, the Tokugawa clan encouraged the creation of salt fields, and since pine needles for fuel were easy to obtain, the largest salt field in Edo (Tokyo) Bay was formed. From the mid-modern period onwards, it also became the terminus of water transport on the Tone River and Edo River, and pilgrimages to Narita became popular, and the riverside settlements prospered as river ports and post towns. After the Meiji period, rice was cultivated in the low marshes, but in 1969 (Showa 44), the Tozai Line of the Teito Rapid Transit Authority (now Tokyo Metro) opened, and apartment complexes and houses began to be built.
