50 volumes. One of the Six National Histories. An imperially commissioned historical work following Montoku Jitsuroku. A chronological record covering 30 years of the reigns of the three emperors Seiwa (reigned 858-876), Yozei (reigned 876-884), and Koko (reigned 884-887). Compilation was started by Fujiwara no Tokihira, Sugawara no Michizane, and Okura no Yoshiyuki under the imperial command of Emperor Uda (reigned 887-897), but was halted for a time when Emperor Uda abdicated. However, it was revived under the imperial command of Emperor Daigo (reigned 897-930), who ascended to the throne, and was completed in 901 (Engi 1). Of the Six National Histories, this book is the largest in volume, with detailed descriptions, a more refined method of recording, greater accuracy, and many articles on politics and the legal system. The extant book is not a complete edition, and while not a single volume of the 50 volumes is missing, there are significant omissions in some volumes. However, the Kokushi Taikei edition supplements this with works such as Ruijukokushi, Nihonkiryaku, and Fuso Ryakuki.
