Born: August 22, 1764 in Paris Died: September 5, 1838. Paris. French architect and furniture designer. He met P. Fontaine at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, and after winning the Prix de Rome (1786), he studied with Fontaine in Rome. He worked with Fontaine for 30 years until his retirement in 1814, and was involved in the renovation and restoration of the Tuileries Palace, Malmaison, the Louvre, the Palais Royal, and other buildings for Napoleon I. He was mainly responsible for interior decoration and furniture design, and established the Empire style. He also built the Arc de Triomphe du Carrousel (1806). The main work they worked on together was the Chapelle Expiatoire (15-26) in Paris. They also co-authored Recueil de décorations intérieures (01), among others.
