A small structure for resting, often set up in a garden, is also called a pavilion (chin). It usually has a square plan and four pillars, but there are also polygonal and circular ones, and the roof is usually made of kaya (thatched) or cedar bark or boards in the Hogyo-zukuri style. It has no walls at all, or only a few, and has benches inside. The Manji-tei Pavilion at Katsura Imperial Villa is an example of an gazebo with benches arranged in the shape of a swastika. The "A" in gazebo means ridge in Chinese, and a gazebo refers to a building with ridges on all four sides, i.e. a Hogyo-zukuri or hipped-ridge building.
