Kock, Charles-Paul de
[Born] May 21, 1793, Passy
Died: April 27, 1871. French writer in Paris. Born to an exiled Dutch banker, his father was executed during the Revolution. He became a banker himself, but was fired after the publication of his debut novel, L'Enfant de ma femme (1813), and thereafter began his career as a writer. His novels, which feature ordinary city folk and girls from the working-class neighborhood, were highly praised not only in Japan but also abroad as "Parisian stories." He was a prolific writer, and his collected works (1902-05) amount to 299 volumes. His representative works include Georgette (1820), Gustave le mauvais sujet (21), Mon voisin Raymond (23), and Monsieur Dupont (24), as well as many melodramas and vaudeville works.

A simple valve that allows and blocks the flow of fluids. A conical plug with a hole in one direction is fitted to the conical surface of the valve body, and the plug is turned to open and close the cock. It opens fully with a quarter turn, so opening and closing does not take much time. The flow path is straight. However, three-way cocks have a different rotation angle when fully open, and the flow path is also curved. Made of cast iron or bronze, they are mainly used for small diameter pipelines and for discharge. There are also glass and ceramic versions.
