Angoulème - Angoulème (English spelling)

The capital of Charente department in western France. Population 43,171 (1999). Located 439 km south-southwest of Paris, facing the Charente River. Former capital of the canton of Angmois. Located on the main route connecting Paris and Bordeaux, it is a key location for road and rail transport and has an airport. While population growth has stagnated in the city center, the suburbs are seeing a rise in population due to the establishment of industries such as metal, electrical machinery, paper, and gold and silverwork. Saint-Pierre Cathedral in the old town was built in the early 12th century, and the current building has been restored.

フランス西部、シャラント県の県都。人口4万3171（1999）。パリ南南西439キロメートルに位置し、シャラント川に臨む。旧アングモア州の州都。パリとボルドーを結ぶ主要交通路上にあるため、道路・鉄道交通の要衝で飛行場も完備している。都心部は人口増加が停滞しているが、郊外には金属、電気機械、製紙、金銀細工などの工業が立地し、人口増加が進んでいる。旧市街地のサン・ピエール大聖堂は12世紀初頭の建立、現在の建物は修復を経たものである。
