Sardine drift net fishing

...This type of fishing is the most advanced of all gillnet fishing methods, and excluding salmon and trout driftnets used in rivers, driftnet fishing for sardines, tuna, Spanish mackerel, flying fish, mackerel, saury, and bonito is the most representative. Most of these were started between the mid-Edo and Meiji periods, but they only became popular after the late Meiji period. Sardine driftnet fishing was quite popular in Echigo from the mid-Edo to the late Edo period, and in Yunohama, Toyoura Village, Nishitagawa County, Uzen, sardine driftnets were introduced from Echigo during the Tenmei period (1781-89), but it is said that they were not in general use until the early Meiji period. In Ineura, Yosa County, Tango, this fishing is called Oioki, and is said to have started in the early Meiji period, and it seems that this fishing was already quite popular at least by the late Edo period along the coasts of Kaga, Noto, and Etchu.

…この種の漁業は刺網漁業中最も進歩したもので，河川で行われたサケ･マス流し網を除くと，イワシ，マグロ，サワラ，トビウオ，サバ，サンマ，カツオなどの各流し網漁業はその代表的なものとして，いずれも江戸中期から明治期にかけて開始されたものが多いが，盛んになったのは明治後期以降のことである。イワシ流し網漁は越後では江戸中期から後期にかけて相当盛んで，羽前西田川郡豊浦村湯野浜では，天明年間(1781‐89)越後よりイワシ流し網が伝来したが，一般に使用されたのは明治初年以降であったといわれる。丹後与謝郡伊根浦ではこの漁を追置と称し，明治初年に開始したといい，加賀･能登･越中沿海では少なくとも江戸後期にはすでにこの漁業が相当盛んであったようである。…
