Zhou Wen-mo (English spelling)

Japanese: 周文謨 - しゅうぶんぼ（英語表記）Zhou Wen-mo

[Born] Qianlong 17 (1752). Jiangsu, Kunshan
[Died] April 19, 1804 (6th year of the Gyeongsang Era). A Christian missionary in the suburbs of Seoul, China. His baptismal name was Jacob. He was called Jacobo Vellogo by the Portuguese. When he was young, he lost his parents, converted to Catholicism, and became one of the first students at the Beijing Theological Seminary. In 1794 (59th year of the Qianlong Era), he changed his surname to the Korean style, Yi, by order of the Bishop of Beijing, de Gouba. He crossed the frozen Yalu River and entered Korea, where Christianity was banned, and secretly engaged in missionary work for about seven years. He was executed in the Xinyou Prison (→ Xinyou Prison).

中国，清のキリスト教宣教師。洗礼名ヤコブ。ポルトガル人からはジャコボ・ベロージョ Jacobo Vellogoと呼ばれた。幼少の頃両親に死別，天主教 (カトリック) に帰依し，北京神学校の第1期生となり，北京主教ド・グーベアの命で，乾隆 59 (1794) 年姓を李と朝鮮風に改め氷結した鴨緑江を越えて禁教下の朝鮮に入り，約7年間ひそかに布教に従事したが，辛酉教獄 (→辛酉の獄 ) にあって刑死。
