German sculptor. Born in Worms. From 1506 to 1509, he worked for Frederick the Wise in the workshop of Cranach the Elder in Wittenberg. In 1512, he became the court sculptor of Margarete, Governor of the Netherlands, in Mechelen, where Dürer visited him. From 1534 onwards, he lived in Antwerp (Anvers), where he is presumed to have died. He is known as a sculptor who bridged the gap between late Gothic and Renaissance, and his representative works include the tombstone for Margarete and her family, and a small sculpture called "Judith" (Bavarian State Museum, Munich).
