Also known as Golovnin. A Russian naval officer. He set out on a voyage around the world in 1807. When he landed on Kunashiri Island in 1811, he was captured by Edo Shogunate officials, but was released in 1813 in exchange for Takadaya Kahei and others who had been captured by the Russians. During this time, he taught Russian and other languages to Baba Sajuro and Mamiya Rinzo. His book Nihon Yujyūki (Record of a Prisoner in Japan) (published in 1816) was translated into many languages, and in Japan, Baba Sajuro, Takahashi Kageyasu, and Aoji Rinso translated it into Japanese under the title Soyaku Nihon Kiji (Chronicle of the Disasters in Japan) based on the Dutch translation. ゴローニンとも。ロシアの海軍士官。1807年世界周航に出発。1811年国後(くなしり)島上陸の際,江戸幕府の役人に捕らえられたが,1813年ロシア側が捕らえた高田屋嘉兵衛らと交換に釈放。この間,馬場佐十郎,間宮林蔵らにロシア語などを教授。著書《日本幽囚記》(1816年刊)は各国語に訳され日本でもオランダ語訳本をもとに馬場佐十郎・高橋景保・青地林宗らが《遭厄(そうやく)日本紀事》と題して翻訳。
