Taxes imposed on mines and other areas during the Edo period. In many cases, residents of mines were semi-isolated into special areas called "yamanaka" or "sakunai" for the purpose of control and management, but necessities for the people's livelihood were brought in by outside merchants. The merchants were allowed to trade in the mountains by paying 1/10 of the silver value of their goods in advance to the government office (bansho). If they did not sell enough to meet the payment, the money was refunded when they left the mountains. Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
