A general term for birds belonging to the genus Mergus in the family Anatidae. Seven species are known worldwide. They have a long, slender body with legs at the rear, adapted for swimming and diving. Some species can dive underwater for up to 90 seconds. Their beaks are long and slender, slightly curved at the tip, and have a row of serrated projections along the edge. This is an adaptation for catching fish. They breed in forests along lakes, marshes, and rivers. They may build nests in the shade of rocks or in grass, but most often they build nests in holes in large trees and lay their eggs inside.
