Lake Shikaribetsu

A volcanic lake in the northern part of the Tokachi Regional Development Bureau in south-central Hokkaido. It has a circumference of 13.8 km, an area of ​​3.4 km2, a maximum depth of 99 m, and an elevation of 810 m above sea level. It is part of Daisetsuzan National Park. There are two theories about its origin: a caldera lake caused by a collapse, and a dammed lake caused by the formation of a volcano. It is surrounded by 1,200-1,300-meter lava domes such as Higashi-Nupkaushi-Nupuri, Nishi-Nupkaushi-Nupuri, and Mount Petoutoru of the Shikaribetsu volcanic group, and a primeval forest of conifers such as Yezo spruce and Todomatsu, and broad-leaved trees such as Sugar maple and Rowan, close to the winding shoreline. The Yanbetsu River flows into the lake in the north and flows out as the Tomabetsu River in the south. It is famous as a habitat for Dolly Varden (char), a natural monument of the prefecture. Lake Shikaribetsu Onsen springs up on the southwest shore. A prefectural road runs from Obihiro City to Nukabira Onsen in the north, and there is a bus service there.

北海道中南部、十勝(とかち)総合振興局管内の北部にある火山性の湖。周囲13.8キロメートル、面積3.4平方キロメートル、水深は最大99メートル、湖面標高810メートル。大雪山国立公園の一部。成因は陥没によるカルデラ湖説と、火山の形成に伴う堰止湖(せきとめこ)説とがある。然別火山群の東ヌプカウシヌプリ、西ヌプカウシヌプリ、ペトウトル山など1200～1300メートルの溶岩円頂丘に囲まれ、エゾマツ、トドマツなどの針葉樹と、イタヤカエデ、ナナカマドなどの広葉樹が混じる原生林が、屈曲に富んだ湖岸線に迫る。湖には北部でヤンベツ川が流入し、南部でトウマベツ川となって流出する。道の天然記念物オショロコマ（イワナ）の生息地として有名。南西岸に然別湖畔温泉が湧(わ)く。帯広(おびひろ)市から北方の糠平(ぬかびら)温泉に至る道道が通じ、バスの便がある。
