Sultan al‐Aṭrash

1891‐1982
A Lebanese Druze political leader. He came from a prominent family. He opposed the proposed division of Syria under the French Mandate and called for the unification of all of Syria. He organized a rebellion and clashed with the French army in 1925-26, but repelled them several times and became a hero of the national struggle. Although the rebellion was eventually suppressed, he went into exile in Transjordan and Saudi Arabia, returning to the country in 1937 but working as a critic of the "National Bloc." His rebellion was effective because it coincided with a period of poor harvests and unemployment, and made the French authorities aware of the existence of a nationalist struggle.

レバノンのドルーズ派の政治指導者。名望家族の出。フランスの委任統治下で地方分割案に反対して全シリアの統合を呼びかけ，反乱を組織して1925‐26年にフランス軍と衝突，何度か撃退して民族闘争の英雄となる。結局，反乱は鎮圧されるがトランス･ヨルダン，サウジアラビアに亡命，37年帰国するが〈国民ブロック〉の批判者として活動。彼の反乱は凶作･失業の時期に重なっていたから有効であり，フランス当局に民族主義闘争の存在を認識させた。
