Anguilla (island) (English spelling)

A small island of 91 km2 surrounded by flat white coral reefs, it is part of the Leeward Islands in the Caribbean Lesser Antilles. It has a population of 10,000 (1994). Its capital is The Valley. There is little land suitable for agriculture, but cotton and other food crops are mainly grown. It has been a British colony since 1650, and in 1967, along with the neighboring islands of St. Kitts and Nevis, it joined the United Provinces of the West Indies, but declared independence the same year. However, Britain did not recognize it, and in 1969 it was separated from the other two islands and became a British dependency, and this status was confirmed in February 1976 by the new Anguilla Constitution.

カリブ海小アンティル諸島のリーワード諸島に属し，平坦で白いサンゴ礁に囲まれた面積91km2の小島。人口1万(1994)。主都はザ･バレー。農業適地は少ないが，綿花や食料作物がおもに栽培されている。1650年からイギリス領植民地であり，1967年隣島のセント･キッツ，ネビスとともに西インド連合州に加入したが，同年独立を宣言した。しかしイギリスは承認せず，69年他の2島と分離してイギリスの属領とし，76年2月のアングイラの新憲法でこの地位が確定した。
