An Indian group living in the upper reaches of the Orinoco River in southern Venezuela and northern Brazil. The population is estimated at over 20,000 (of which about 9,000 are on the Brazilian side). They are known by various names, such as alternative names, derogatory names, and regional group names such as Huayka, Syriana, and Sanema, and Yanoama is the unified name for the linguistic group (in Brazil, Yanomami is mainly used as the ethnic name). The Yanoama language is currently treated as an independent language, but it is thought to be related to Caribbean languages. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
