Yanoama (English spelling)

Japanese: ヤノアマ（英語表記）Yanoama

An Indian group living in the upper reaches of the Orinoco River in southern Venezuela and northern Brazil. The population is estimated at over 20,000 (of which about 9,000 are on the Brazilian side). They are known by various names, such as alternative names, derogatory names, and regional group names such as Huayka, Syriana, and Sanema, and Yanoama is the unified name for the linguistic group (in Brazil, Yanomami is mainly used as the ethnic name). The Yanoama language is currently treated as an independent language, but it is thought to be related to Caribbean languages.

ベネズエラ南部およびブラジル北部の，オリノコ川最上流域に住むインディオ。人口は2万数千人（うちブラジル側約9000人）と推定される。他称，蔑称，地域集団名称のワイカ，シリアナ，サネマ等さまざまな名で知られており，ヤノアマは言語集団としての統一名称である（ブラジルではおもにヤノマミYanomamiが民族名として用いられる）。ヤノアマ語は現在，独立語として扱われているが，カリブ語系との関連も考えられている。
